Silicon Valley, CA – Rep. Mike Honda announced today that he has received the endorsement of Sierra Club, one of the most influential grassroots environmental organizations in the country, for his re-election to represent California’s 17th Congressional District.
John Cordes, a Sunnyvale resident and Director of the Loma Prieta Chapter of Sierra Club, spoke about Rep. Honda’s leadership on local environmental issues: “Mike Honda has been a leader on improving Silicon Valley’s environment for decades. As a County Supervisor, he created the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority, which has allowed Silicon Valley to undergo its rapid growth while preserving the natural environment. When the Federal government dragged its feet on remediation of Mt. Umunhum, Mike showed leadership by securing the funds needed to make it happen, and the site will soon be open for the public to enjoy. We couldn’t ask for a more effective leader on local environmental issues than Congressman Mike Honda.”
David Scott, Sierra Club President, said, “Mike Honda has consistently stuck up for the environment in Congress, making sure that Americans can count on clean air and water wherever they live. He has been a key partner in fighting against threats to public safety like unregulated fracking and the Keystone XL pipeline. Sierra Club is proud to endorse Congressman Honda for re-election in 2014.”
The Sierra Club, with more than 2.1 million members and supporters nationwide, works to safeguard the health of our communities, protect wildlife, and preserve our remaining wild places through grassroots activism, public education, and litigation. The group was founded by conservationist John Muir in 1892.
“My parents were strawberry sharecroppers in this valley, and they instilled in me the importance of protecting the natural beauty of our home. I look forward to continuing my work in Congress to make sure that generations to come can enjoy it as well.” said Rep. Honda.
With the endorsement, Sierra Club joins other grassroots progressive organizations that have endorsed Rep. Honda’s re-election, including: Democracy for America, KAYA: Filipinos for Progress, MoveOn, and Planned Parenthood.
